July 6, Through the Pages of History: In this incident that took place during July 1984, 9 Sikh militants hijacked an Indian Airlines flight (Flight 405) from Srinagar to New Delhi and forced it to land at Lahore’s Allama Iqbal International Airport. The hijackers allegedly raised demands of the Khalistan movement and demanded the release of other Sikh leaders, including the Akali Dal in response to Operation Blue Star. The plane remained at Lahore airport for about 22 hours. Later, after the intervention of Pakistani authorities and successful negotiations, the hijackers surrendered, and all the passengers were released safely.

July 6, Through the Pages of History: This historic referendum was held on 6 July 1947 in Sylhet district of the British province of Assam at the time of the Partition of India. Its purpose was to know the opinion of the people whether they wanted to join India with the undivided province of Assam or become part of the Eastern Province of Pakistan (East Bengal). As a result of this public referendum (referendum), the majority of Sylhet voted in favor of Pakistan, after which the district was included in East Pakistan.

Nancy Reagan, American actress and former first lady, was born in 1921
Nancy Reagan was born on July 6, 1921 in New York City. She was the wife of Ronald Reagan, the 40th President of the United States, and served as the First Lady of the United States from 1981 to 1989. As First Lady, her greatest social recognition was the “Just Say No” anti-drug campaign. Apart from politics, she was also a popular Hollywood actress who appeared in many films in the 1940s and 1950s. She died on March 6, 2016, at the age of 94, and was buried next to her husband at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library in California.

MM Alam, Pakistan’s fighter pilot’s birthday
July 6, Through the Pages of History: Muhammad Mahmood Alam (MM Alam) was a legendary fighter pilot of Pakistan born on July 6, 1935 in Calcutta. According to the Guinness Book of World Records, he holds the unique distinction of shooting down the most aircraft (five) in one minute, which he did on the Sargodha front in the 1965 war. He completed his secondary education from Sindh Government High School, Dhaka in 1951 and was commissioned in the Pakistan Air Force in October 1953. He was awarded the Sitara-e-Jurat for his outstanding achievements in the 1965 war. He retired as an Air Commodore in 1982 and died on March 18, 2013 in Karachi after a long illness.

Panama Papers Leaks:
On July 6, 2018, a Pakistani anti-corruption court sentenced former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif to 10 years in prison in the Avenfield corruption case resulting from the Panama Papers leaks. In November 2023, the Islamabad High Court had quashed Nawaz Sharif’s conviction and acquitted him honorably in the Avenfield corruption case. Earlier, in September 2022, the Islamabad High Court had also quashed the convictions of Maryam Nawaz and Captain (retd) Safdar. In March 2024, the court had also acquitted his sons, Hassan Nawaz and Hussain Nawaz, in other references, including Avenfield. These references were filed in light of the Supreme Court of Pakistan’s decision that came out as a result of the JIT report formed to investigate the Panama Leaks.
